Step 5: Brainstorm solutions

Position yourself not as the leader of a team, but as a member as well.

While real power differences exist among members of any healthcare team, open communication and awareness of power gradients can help the group constructively manage any conflicts that arise.

Frame solutions in terms of how they will achieve the shared interests. Look for options that meet the needs of both parties. Remember to be flexible and consider all alternatives.

  • Does this option address the other person’s concerns?
  • Does this option address my concerns?
  • If no satisfactory agreement can be reached, get help.
    • Ask: “What resources exist to help us negotiate?”

Be explicit about what will happen, who will do it, and how follow-up will occur.
