Step 1. Identify Emotion Cues – Family Conference

Before we learn how to respond to emotions, let’s first practice identifying emotion cues, or the “Fast pathway,” in our conversations with Sheryl and Josh. The first part of the discussion with Sheryl and Josh will play and the dialogue will appear on the right hand side. Whenever you see an emotion cue, click on the corresponding text to identify the emotion (Clue = There are 5 emotion cues in this scene). Press play to begin.

As you can see from this exercise, emotions were high from the beginning. Sheryl has spent three sleepless weeks by Ryan’s bedside, a perfect example of prolonged stress. Her “Fast Pathway” has taken over her entire bandwidth and her “Slow Cognitive Pathway” has no chance to jump in.
