What can we learn from Mrs. Zhang?

In Mrs. Zhang's case, you learned that by leaving the door open you can be involved in the end-of-life care of patients who prefer alternative therapy to Western medicine. You can:
  • Use open-ended questions, such as the Explanatory Model questions, to elicit the patient's perspective on her illness and preference for care.
  • Negotiate mutually agreeable goals of care that respect the patient's preferences.
  • Include family members involved in the patient’s care.
  • Offer information and oversight to patients who elect to use CAM instead of or in combination with Western medicine.
  • Collaborate with CAM practitioners to provide integrated patient care.
  • Use the LEARN process to build an ongoing relationship with the patient, leaving the door open for future consultations.
