Later that day, Dr. Miller contacts Mrs. Zhang's traditional Chinese medicine (TMC) provider, and they discuss her diagnosis and preferences for care. The physician learns the following from the TMC provider:
- He referred Mrs. Zhang to the gastroenterologist, and he will also suggest she visit the oncologist to learn about her treatment options, while continuing to provider care for her.
- He understands there is tension between Mrs. Zhang and her less-traditional daughter over the type of care she should receive. He has tried to mediate the situation by providing information to both of them and allowing Mrs. Zhang to choose the care she wants.
- He recognizes that Mrs. Zhang's nausea and pain are partially controlled with TMC therapies and agrees that Western medications are appropriate if she wants them.
- He has been treating Mrs. Zhang for constipation as well as for nausea and pain.
Dr. Miller and the TCM provider agree to co-manage Mrs. Zhang's care.
Dr. Miller then speaks with Mrs. Zhang by phone, summarizing the conversation for her and asking if she wants an oncology referral or medicine for her symptoms. Mrs. Zhang prefers to wait until she sees the TCM provider again but agrees to make a follow-up appointment with Dr. Miller.
