Introduction

Welcome to this unfolding case study about the management of an older adult in the midst of a health crisis. This case is a composite of many actual cases that have been seen in Emergency Departments. During the course of this case study, you will be presented with information as the providers learn of the patient’s emergent and ongoing health concerns – from her Emergency Department admission through her Intensive Care Unit stay. You will be asked to make decisions and use your best judgment about how to best care for this patient.

This case study is divided into 2 units – the Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit. You will navigate to the unit in the upper menu, and then once in the unit, you will be able to go to a specific slide by clicking on the numbered circles. Many of the slides will ask what you would do based on the information provided. There will be a box to enter your answer and you will have the opportunity to compare your answers to those from experienced providers across disciplines. Your answers will not be saved or submitted.

Once you have read all the information on a slide, click the “Next” button at the bottom of the screen to move to the next slide.
