Where to start and what to assess

Patients with heart disease are at risk for major depression and elevated depressive symptoms, and routine screening is recommended by the American Heart Association.

The patient was admitted to rule out rejection and for psychiatric consult regarding concerns for depression. Patient had a similar admission in 2014, and at the time was voluntarily admitted to a psychiatric unit. Upon discharge he was prescribed buproprion XL 150mg daily.

    Below is a list of common symptoms for depression.
  1. Depressed mood
  2. Anhedonia (loss of interest in activities)
  3. Significant weight loss or weight gain
  4. Sleep (insomnia, hypersomnia)
  5. Psychomotor (stillness, agitation)
  6. Fatigue or loss of energy
  7. Feelings of worthlessness, excessive/inappropriate guilt
  8. Poor concentration, or indecisiveness
  9. Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts. Please refer to the DSM 5 – Diagnostic Criteria for more information.
