Depression in Heart Failure and the PHQ-2 Screening Tool

Depression is 5 times more prevalent in patients with heart failure than in the general population.

Heart Failure patients who are depressed have:
  • Reduced function
  • Higher readmission rates
  • High mortality risk
  • Greater severity and decline after 6 months
  • Worsened cognitive impairment and pseudo-dementia*
    • *Pseudo-dementia is severe depression that presents as dementia, but responds to antidepressant treatment with significant improvement of both mood and memory

The Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) is a shortened version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) that can help ascertain coexisting depression and cognitive impairment diagnoses. This two-question survey may be administered in conjunction with the Mini-CogTM or AD-8 without taking excessive time out of the patient’s routine assessment.
